Job Scope & Purpose

The Montessori teacher functions as a guide, who helps direct his/her students’ activities in a prepared Montessori environment. A Head Teacher must be adept at student observation in accordance with the Montessori philosophy for the age group in which he/she is working with. All Head Teachers at the Kennebec Montessori School must be certified through an accredited Montessori training program (AMS or AMI affiliated).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engage positively and professionally with staff and families, model behavior for children
  • Prepare and maintain a peaceful and prepared environment to foster student directed learning
  • Be responsible for the welfare, safety, and educational progress of students
  • Give lessons to children and oversee the educational plan for each child
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other Head Teachers to provide a cohesive learning community for students at KMS
  • Plan regular field trips in order to enrich the classroom learning experience, including regular opportunities working outside in nature.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date student records including attendance and academic progress in Transparent Classroom
  • Prepare for and participate in parent conferences, trainings, meetings and communications throughout the school year
  • Prepare materials to supplement the Montessori materials in the classroom
  • Communicate with the Head of School all concerns regarding parents, children or other staff
  • Read and adhere to the guidelines of the Staff Handbook
  • Attend and participate in school functions, including monthly and weekly staff meetings, parent workshops, back to school night etc.
  • Complete and document all required Professional Development and training to support KMS certifications and affiliations
  • Participate in a minimum of 2 community events in addition to normal all-school events (concerts, etc.) during the school year.

Skills and Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will be engaged in the culture and community at KMS, passionate about working with children, flexible in doing what is needed to meet the needs of the day, and open to feedback and growing with our school.
  • Experience working with children is a must, state teaching certification is preferred.
  • Early Childhood Montessori credential is required.
  • Candidates should expect to crawl, sit, kneel, go outside in varied terrain and weather, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Mandated Reporter training are required. Training can be arranged for candidates who do not hold these qualifications.
  • All members of the KMS team are positive ambassadors of our school community.

The Primary Head Teacher position is a full time job following an academic calendar. The Head Teacher is expected to work no less than 37.5 hours per week, inclusive of work done outside of the KMS property.
