JOB TITLE: Assistant Teacher, Primary 3-6 Classroom
HOURS: Full-time, M-F 8am – 3pm (includes a break for lunch)
FLSA: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY
Montessori Children’s House of Valle Forge is looking for an Assistant Teacher to support the Head Teacher in delivering a developmentally appropriate and engaging curriculum aligned with Montessori principles in a mixed age group setting. The Assistant Teacher will also oversee the children during the Montessori afternoon programs, as well as a period of indoor or outdoor playtime, while maintaining a safe and nurturing environment. The ideal candidate should have experience working with children and a strong desire to make a positive impact on their lives.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Head Teacher in implementing an age-appropriate, engaging, and consistent curriculum aligned with the Montessori philosophy for 3-6 year olds
- Maintain a consistent routine, organized supplies, and clean environment as directed by the Head Teacher
- Engage with students in whole groups, small groups, or individually during classroom learning experiences, in collaboration with the Head Teacher
- Assist with classroom responsibilities such as making copies, replenishing materials, and maintaining classroom supplies
- Monitor and/or maintain classroom guidelines, in collaboration with Head Teacher
- Participate in pre-planning and in-service days in collaboration with the Head Teacher
- Supervise and assist students during transitions such as arrival and dismissal
- Provide supervision and support of the students during Gym, Spanish, Art and Music classes, or other enrichment activities
- Attend monthly Assistant Teacher meetings
- Attend or supervise students during Parent Teacher conferences, school events, and community gatherings as needed
- Lead class when Head Teacher is absent
- Model grace and courtesy at all times and support children in doing the same
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all students at all times
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with children, colleagues, and families
REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field required; Montessori certification a plus
- 2+ years experience with young children or experience in a classroom, educational environment or daycare setting required; experience working with children with learning differences a plus
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to implement and support engaging and educational activities
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
- Passion for working with children and making a positive impact on their lives
- Childcare clearances, including Child Abuse, Fingerprinting report, Criminal Background check, and CPR/First Aid certification
- Two letters of professional references required
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Audible voice and adequate hearing and vision are required to communicate effectively and supervise the children.
- Ability to stand, walk, and move around for extended periods of time, including bending, stooping and crouching to interact with young children.
- Ability to lift a small child, up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work is primarily indoors in a classroom setting or outside at our playground
- May be required to attend special events or programs
- May be exposed to noise and distractions from children and other staff members
