Green Hedges seeks a full-time Montessori Assistant teacher with a background in early childhood education and a commitment to the Montessori philosophy and method. Green Hedges is a private independent preschool through Grade 8 school with approximately 140 students. The School is located in Vienna, VA, which is fourteen miles west of Washington, DC.

The Montessori Assistant works with and supports the lead teacher in planning and implementing a full Montessori curriculum, as defined by Green Hedges School, including social, creative, and academic activities. Classroom assistants also help prepare and maintain an orderly, attractive, and joyful environment. They provide another pair of observant, attentive eyes and ears. Classroom assistants are crucial in modeling courteous and respectful behavior as well as contributing to the warm, supportive, and calm atmosphere that is the hallmark of the Montessori classroom.

Requirements

A successful candidate for the Montessori Assistant position with have: Undergraduate degree in education or a related field • Experience working in a Montessori classroom setting with young children: Montessori certification preferred (or in process) • Knowledge of the academic and social-emotional development of preschool and kindergarten students • A love for working with young children • A high level of energy and strong, positive presence • Excellent time management, organizational, and communication skills • Initiative • Ability to collaborate with colleagues

Candidates must successfully complete a required background check.

Responsibilities

  • Embrace and implement the Montessori philosophy.

  • Assist with designing and implementing the Montessori curriculum using the approved Green Hedges School guidelines.

  • Observe student behaviors and assist in keeping accurate records of student progress/development and be a key teacher for a number of students ages three through five.

  • Assist with parent conferences and additional conferences initiated by either the parent or the teacher.

  • Present a positive role model for students; model grace and courtesy

  • Assist in the development of independence

  • Maintain a well-organized, neat, and safe environment for all students, families, staff and guests.

  • Preserve and protect lessons and all classroom materials

  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and an ability to work with others in the classroom.

  • Attend to the individual needs and interests of students and ensure there are relevant resources for their interests

  • Maintain safety and appearance of the classroom 

Other

  • Attend faculty meetings and required special events such as Open House.

  • Maintain a positive and professional relationship with all members of the Green Hedges School community.

  • Adhere to the Faculty Code of Ethics in the Personnel Manual.

  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

 

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires frequent bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, pushing and pulling, and sitting and walking, and may involve some running and lift children (up to 45 pounds).

  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, providing oral information, ability to operate various business equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects.
