Director of Development

The Director of Development is a twelve month position responsible for planning, organizing, and directing Sterling Montessori’s fundraising, including the annual fund, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. The Director reports to and works closely with the Executive Director in all development and fundraising endeavors.  



  • College degree preferred: A degree in Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations preferred.
  • Job experience working for non-profits preferred, which includes prior fundraising experience encompassing annual fund development and major gifts.
  • Experience in corporate and private fundraising, including community outreach, and events.
  • Must embrace the mission of Sterling Montessori.
  • Understand and interpret the mission and programs to prospects, donors, and community.
  • Strong project management, interpersonal, analytical, organizational, and writing skills.
  • Computer skills, including familiarity with fundraising software.
  • Ability to work with and motivate staff, board members, donors/prospects, and volunteers.
  • Ability to reach out to the community and build and sustain relationships with key business partners to secure grants, donations, and sponsorship programs.
  • Be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls.
  • Energetic, motivated, and flexible, able to multi-task and work independently.
  • Be organized and exhibit “follow through” on tasks and goals.



  • Develop and implement strategic and fundraising plans to meet annual, capital, and endowment goals.
  • Create and execute a strategy to develop a large, sustained base of annual donors.
  • Meet prospective donors to establish communications with them regarding capital needs and projects.
  • Develop a gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major private and corporate donors, including current community members, and alumni.
  • Oversee grant procurement including research, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
  • Direct the annual fund program, including all communications and annual fundraising drives.
  • Coordinate fundraising events and attend student and parent functions when necessary.
  • Work with Executive Director and Board of Directors to set annual and long-range fundraising goals.
  • Make public appearances and accept speaking engagements to share information with the community.
  • Attend committee meetings and assist in the drafting of reports to the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee fundraising database, tracking systems, and acknowledgement process to ensure donors receive proper written responses for gifts made to the school.
  • Oversee creation of publications and communications to support fund raising activities.
  • At all times demonstrate professional conduct as written in the Sterling Employee Handbook.
