The Tidewater School is a small Montessori school in rural Southern Maryland, near the Chesapeake Bay and Patuxent River, 45 minutes from Washington, D.C. and 30 minutes from Annapolis. Founded in 1986, the school prides itself on providing a rich and intimate learning environment for children ages 3-12 with a unique focus on social and emotional learning, environmental stewardship, and multicultural education. With just over 60 total students in Primary and Elementary, we are looking for a person who appreciates being part of a collaborative, supportive team in a family-friendly workplace. The teacher will join another Elementary teacher and an assistant in this growing program.

Responsibilities include:

Teaching Duties

  • Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of Montessori philosophy
  • Manages classroom behaviors and sets a positive tone through modeling and best practices
  • Creates lessons and instruction that support the whole child
  • Use school curriculum, current research, and Montessori albums to develop units of instruction for each individual child
  • Can use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate and support student development
  • Prepares the classroom and outdoor environments so that that they meet the developmental needs of the children
  • Completes progress reports, documentation, and conferences in alignment with school timelines
  • Participates in training and supervision of assistants
  • Shares knowledge of Lower Elementary curriculum with teaching partner
  • Helps to organize and maintain materials

Teamwork and Parent Education 

  • Cooperates with all with staff members in coordinating curriculum, maintaining school traditions, and employing best practices in all areas of the school community
  • Participates in meetings, training and planning in order to meet the needs of each child
  • Is capable and eager to share knowledge of child development concepts and school practices/philosophy with all stakeholders
  • Understands and promotes the school’s mission and values
  • Enthusiastically supports school policies and regulations
  • Participates in school functions, field trips, professional development, and extracurricular activities as determined in consultation with the Head of School
  • Maintains a strong working relationship with the Head of School

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Montessori certification at the Lower Elementary level
