Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a beautiful facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Job Title: Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging

 

Start Date: August, 2024

Reports to: Head of School and Assistant Head of School

Brief Description: The Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging is a member of the Senior Administrative Team and is responsible for collaborating with that team to oversee the school’s goals for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) for students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees and families. These goals will be pursued within the context of the School’s mission. This is full-time, 12 month position.

Responsibilities: Oversee the school's goal of reaching best practices in respect to     diversity, equity inclusion and belonging for students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, families, and external community members. The Director of DEIB’s essential tasks and responsibilities include:

 

Faculty and Staff Initiatives 

  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff to cultivate DEIB skills, including their development of curriculum and programs and their engagement with a community of diverse students, colleagues, and families.
  • Facilitate ongoing faculty and staff Professional Development to ensure growth in skills and dispositions towards greater equity and belonging
  • Participate in hiring faculty and staff
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Administrative Team
  • Facilitate a Faculty and Staff Diversity Committee

 

Student  Initiatives 

  • Support/act as a liaison for student diversity efforts in collaboration with their teachers

 

Family  Initiatives 

  • Support/act as a liaison for the Parent Diversity Group

 

Board of Trustee  Initiatives 

  • Serve as a resource to the Board of Trustees on DEIB initiatives

 

Overall School  Initiatives 

  • Perform various reasonable tasks from time to time as requested by the Assistant Head of School and Head of School
  • Build and evaluate diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging curriculum, opportunities, and programming for students, families and faculty and staff
  • Advise and support a wide range of affinity spaces for students, faculty and staff and families
  • In conjunction with the Head of School, lead the school’s implementation of the DEIB initiative in the school’s Strategic Plan
  • Comply with the established policies and procedures of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School
  • Participate in school wide events as an active member of the community

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Masters Degree preferred
  • Commitment to co-creating a diverse and inclusive community grounded in Montessori philosophy and pedagogy. 
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a strong interest in planning multicultural programming that inspires a sense of community and belonging
  • Experience with diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work 
  • High levels of integrity and honesty and values dignity and respect

Salary range is $95,000-105,000, based on experience, qualifications, and aligned with the school’s financial landscape.
