Small Savers Montessori ( in Washington, D.C. is seeking a new director for our thriving center with 17 staff members and up 72 students in four classrooms from infant to preschool. The role provides a unique opportunity to work with committed families and exceptional staff as Small Savers seeks Montessori accreditation. The Director or Small Savers will not only possess excellent communication, financial management, and operational skills, but also model the Montessori philosophy to inspire the school community.  


General Responsibilities:


Management and Leadership

  • Work with the Board of Directors to fulfill the organization’s mission, vision, and strategy
  • Develop and lead teacher and administrative teams
  • Identify human resource needs and hire, train, manage, and evaluate staff, contractors, and volunteers
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal and District of Columbia laws and regulations
  • Manage Center’s daily operations
  • Effectively assess, manage, and mitigate risks that impact the mission of Small Savers
  • Drive enrollment and student retention in all programs
  • Manage prospective students’ waitlist
  • Effectively collaborate with parents and teachers to ensure positive developmental experiences for students
  • Serve as the ultimate accountable leader to problem solve with parents to address family questions and concerns



  • Support, provide oversight, monitor and evaluate quality implementation of Montessori pedagogy, curriculum, and programs
  • Work with staff to identify curriculum needs and program support
  • Work with staff to develop and implement procedures for tracking student status and progress
  • Model and sustain a culture of giving, volunteerism, global awareness and citizenship



  • Cultivate and maintain effective, constructive communication with staff, parents, and the Board of Directors
  • Manage production of monthly newsletter to Small Savers families
  • Oversee all internal school communications to foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive work environment
  • Develop and implement marketing plan
  • Represent the school at community and professional events


Financial Management

  • Guide Center’s overall financial health ensuring resources are carefully managed within budgetary guidelines and used to support the Center’s mission and strategic objectives
  • Manage Center budget of approximately $1.1 million (preparing annual budget, determining appropriate investments to support educational philosophy, etc.) working closely with Accountant and Treasurer
  • Drive and oversee Center development including generating creative mechanisms for securing funding
  • Determine need for, negotiate, and hire external professionals such as accountants and insurance agents
  • Produce monthly statements concerning the Center’s financial health, including enrollment, outstanding accounts, income, expenditures, and cash flow projections.


Required Qualifications:

  • Credentials sufficient to satisfy Section 164.1 “District of Columbia Childcare Center Director Requirements,” available here:
  • Experience leading in an educational environment, including managing childcare policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Experience leading and/or coordinating educational and administrative staff
  • Experience in a Montessori environment or willingness to embrace / demonstrated interest in learning more about Montessori philosophy and practices
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and time management
  • Strong emotional intelligence and capacity to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and the Board of Directors
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to represent Small Savers externally
  • Possession of a growth mindset as foundation for working with staff and students
  • Interest in fostering collaborative environment where staff, families, and Board of Directors work together to brainstorm ideas, learn through feedback, and strive for excellence and growth
  • Technologically fluent (ex. Microsoft Excel, student information systems, communicating with parents and staff)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with, and understanding of, AMS Montessori
  • Marketing and branding experience
  • Experience with non-profit management
