Lead Teacher

The Children’s House of Baltimore has an opening for a classroom teacher for the coming school year. We are looking for a caring, nurturing, and courteous person to join our small, play-based garden preschool for the coming school year. We are hoping to find someone who would like to work approximately 35-40 hours a week.

We are a single-classroom community of 10-20 preschool children, ages two to five, located in a beautiful garden and courtyard in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore, not far from the Johns Hopkins University campus. The Lead Teacher will work alongside the Director and other Lead Teachers in helping to cultivate a child-led learning community, fostering inclusiveness, courtesy, and calm. Primary duties include: 

  • Supports the Director in guiding student activities inside and outside of the classroom
  • Plans and oversees learning during times when the Director is out of the classroom, in collaboration with other teachers
  • Maintains a calm, caring attitude during constant observation of the children, respectfully enforcing ground rules and classroom behavior guidelines
  • Uses redirection, listening, clear expectations and positive reinforcement to aid in social and emotional development
  • Assists in maintaining a neat, well organized, and prepared environment, and maintains environment during, before, and after-school care hours. 

Secondary duties that may arise occasionally include:

  • Attends all staff meetings, professional sessions and school events as needed. 
  • Follows the school’s policies and procedures for student record keeping.

Compensation will be based on training and experience. We are primarily looking for someone who is excited about our little school. We can provide on-the-job training to new teachers, but candidates who bring training and previous experience are also strongly encouraged to apply.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree preferred, high school diploma required
  • 90 hours Preschool Certification (we can assist in obtaining this training)
  • Basic Health and Safety training (we can assist in obtaining this training)
  • Experience with preschool-aged children in a center preferred
  • Knowledge of child behavior and development
  • Valid CPR and First Aid certifications (we can assist in obtaining these)
  • Ability to work on the floor with students and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Maryland teaching certification, or a degree in education
