Location: Montessori School 

Position Type: Full-Time 

Schedule: Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM 

Grade Levels: Ages 3 years old to 8th grade 

 

School History: 

Founded in 1968 by Barbara R. Spitzer as a private, non-profit school, CMS has served as a model for the education community in Birmingham for over 50 years. CMS enrolls 250 students at the toddler, primary, elementary, and adolescent levels (18 months through 8th Grade) on a two-acre campus located in the center of Homewood. The campus houses four modern buildings surrounding a central, spacious outdoor environment. The classroom environments themselves are large, well-lit, well equipped with Montessori materials, and open to the outdoors. The school is supported by a vested not-for-profit board and an operating budget of over 2.5 million dollars.

Job Description: 

We are looking for a creative and enthusiastic Art Teacher to join our Montessori School team. This position requires a passion for art education and an ability to inspire students aged 5 to 14 to explore their creativity and develop their artistic skills. The ideal candidate will create a nurturing environment that encourages self-expression and appreciation for the arts. The art teacher will teach group lessons for students ages 5 years old through 8th grade from 10:00-3:00pm.  From 3:00-5:00pm, the instructor will teach smaller afterschool extracurricular activities to students 3 years old through 8th grade.   

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and implement an engaging art curriculum that aligns with Montessori principles, catering to the diverse needs of students from preschool to middle school. 
  • Teach various art techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media, while encouraging exploration and experimentation. 
  • Organize and lead extracurricular art activities, including after-school programs, art clubs, and exhibitions. 
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes artistic expression and collaboration among students. 
  • Assess and evaluate student progress through individual feedback and assessments, adapting teaching methods to meet varying skill levels. 
  • Collaborate with other teachers to integrate art into the broader curriculum and school projects. 
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding student progress and involvement in art programs. 

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field. 
  • Previous teaching experience, preferably in a Montessori or similar educational setting. 
  • Strong skills in a variety of art mediums and techniques. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a passion for working with children. 
  • Ability to create a supportive and inspiring artistic environment.
