Position Overview 

The Lead Teacher will be responsible for planning, implementing, and maintaining a Montessori-based curriculum that fosters academic, social, emotional, and physical development for children ages 3-5 years old. As a member of our teaching team, the Lead Teacher will work in collaboration with the Assistant Teacher, staff, and families to provide a positive and enriching learning experience in line with our mission and Montessori principles and DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Families) regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classroom Leadership
  • Lead the daily operations of the Pre-K classroom
  • Ensure a prepared and engaging Montessori environment for all students.
  • Set up the classroom with appropriate learning materials and ensure a safe, clean, and organized space.
  • Montessori Curriculum Implementation
  • Plan and deliver individualized Montessori lessons in accordance with the child's developmental needs.
  • Adapt lessons to suit varying learning styles and developmental stages.
  • Foster a hands-on learning environment that encourages exploration, independence, and discovery.
  • Observation and Assessment
  • Regularly observe and assess each child’s progress.
  • Provide developmentally appropriate feedback to parents and guardians.
  • Maintain accurate records of student development and behavior.
  • Family and Community Engagement
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding their child's development and classroom activities.
  • Lead parent-teacher conferences
  • Contribute to school-wide events and activities.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork
  • Work closely with the Assistant Teacher and other staff to ensure effective classroom management and smooth classroom operation.
  • Participate in school meetings, planning sessions, and professional development activities.
  • Adherence to Montessori Philosophy
  • Nurture a child-centered approach to learning.
  • Respect each child’s individuality.
  • Foster an environment supporting autonomy and self-regulation.
  • Professional Development
  • Stay current with best practices in Montessori education and early childhood development through ongoing learning and professional development opportunities.

State of Washington – Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have completed a high school education or equivalent.
  • Completion of Washington State STARS (State Training and Accreditation for Childcare Providers) training and registry system requirements.
  • A clear background check as required by Washington State law.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Food handling preparation license (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Earned 12 credits in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or equivalent or have a plan to meet this requirement within the timeframe specified by DCYF (dcyf.wa.gov).
  • Experience working with children of the same age group as the center serves.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, or a related field (required). Montessori certification (AMS or AMI) is strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in an early childhood education setting, with experience in a Montessori classroom preferred.
  • Passion for working with young children and a strong understanding of Montessori principles and methods.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and inclusive approach to working with staff, parents, and children.
  • Ability to provide a nurturing, positive, and structured environment that encourages independent learning.

Compensation

  • Salary: Competitive, based on experience and qualifications ($45,000 to $55,000 annually).
