Position Overview 

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Assistant Teacher to support the Lead Teacher in the daily operations of a Montessori classroom. This role ensures a nurturing and structured environment for children, upholds Montessori principles and complies with Washington State DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Families) requirements. The Assistant Teacher will help facilitate a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Classroom Support
  • Assist the Lead Teacher in preparing and maintaining a Montessori-prepared classroom environment.
  • Support daily activities, ensuring they align with Montessori educational principles.
  • Encourage independent learning and hands-on engagement through carefully prepared materials.
  • Observe and document children's progress and communicate effectively with the Lead Teacher.
  • Child Supervision & Development
  • Foster a warm and safe learning environment for young children.
  • Assist in guiding children’s social, emotional, and academic development.
  • Model and reinforce positive behavior and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Support individualized learning and help children develop essential life skills.
  • Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure adherence to Washington State DCYF licensing regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records for attendance, assessments, and health protocols.
  • Follow all school safety policies and procedures, including emergency preparedness.
  • Ensure that classroom materials are clean, organized, and age-appropriate.
  • Communication & Teamwork
  • Collaborate with the Lead Teacher and staff to ensure a harmonious and productive classroom environment.
  • Engage with parents and families to provide updates and support a strong school-community relationship.
  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development workshops, and training programs.

State of Washington – Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have completed a high school education or equivalent.
  • Completion of Washington State STARS (State Training and Accreditation for Childcare Providers) training and registry system requirements.
  • A clear background check as required by Washington State law.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Food handling preparation license.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with young children, preferably in a Montessori or early childhood setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative and inclusive approach to working with staff, parents, and children.
  • Ability to provide a nurturing, positive, and structured environment that encourages independent learning.

Skills

  • Understanding of Montessori principles and classroom structure.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and support children in a structured learning environment.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
