General Position Description 

The Guide is responsible for developing a cohesive teaching team, coordinating the curriculum, and managing the day-to-day operational activities of the classroom. Guides must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in order to ensure a safe and stimulating classroom environment where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Guide must be skilled in communicating with both children and adults in order to meet the needs of the children, effectively guide teacher assistants, and resolve parental concerns. 

This position reports to the Co-Directors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and implement educational curriculum by developing classroom activities based on developmentally appropriate practices and early learning standards; ensuring that all materials are in good repair and all sets complete. 
  • Developing materials when needed. 
  • Lead by example; encourage teaching team success through modeling and coaching
  • Plan individual and group age-appropriate activities to actively engage children and encourage social, cognitive and emotional growth.
  • Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Ensure a healthy classroom environment – including maintaining appropriate hygiene and cleanliness standards and safety and security of children. May include diapering. 
  • Working with children ages birth to 3 years in a loving and nurturing way.
  • Ensure all center policies and state regulations are met.
  • Supervise teacher assistants and classroom volunteers to ensure they are following planned activities, hygiene and safety standards.
  • Attend professional development meetings and school events as a member of the school community.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching in a Montessori classroom ages birth to three years old. 
  • Must have a thorough understanding of Montessori philosophy. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • The ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.
  • A strong understanding of child development.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Infant/child/adult CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Must clear full background check, tuberculosis test, and complete any required credentials for state licensing

Requirements

  • Montessori Certified for ages 0-3, AMS, AMI, or MACTE
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements

  • The ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools or controls.
  • May be required to kneel, bend, squat, sit on the floor for extended periods of time, or crawl. 
  • Ability to lift approximately 25lbs.
